Time To Get Together
Exciting times this morning. Despite the June Gloom here in Southern California we are getting together in the studio today to begin tracking our next round of demos. Who knows what’s going to happen? Last night our good friend David Newton helped us set up drum mics and made sure that our attempts today would be valiant. Thank you Dave! We’ll try to snap some photos of our pretty selves so you can see. In the meantime, here’s a little Gilberto Gil for you.

An Earworm Addendum-The Millennium
I can’t stop listening to these songs from The Millennium. These two songs are from Begin from The Millennium. It’s a song called Prelude. The album, released in 1968, was the only record from this California collective. The group was under the direction of Curt Boettcher. Some hail this record as a landmark of sunshine pop. You be the judge!

Technicolor Web Of Sound/My 60s Earworm-Kensington Market
Earworm, is a term for a portion of a song or other musical material that repeats compulsively within one’s mind, known colloquially as “music being stuck in one’s head”. Use of the English translation was popularized by James Kellaris and Daniel Levitin. Kellaris’ studies demonstrated that different people have varying susceptibilities to earworms, but that almost everybody has been afflicted with one at some time or another. The psychoanalyst Theodor Reik used the term haunting melody to describe the psychodynamic features of the phenomenon. Another scientific term for the phenomenon, involuntary musical imagery, was suggested by the neurologist Oliver Sacks in 2007.
I recently have been encountering many Earworms after listening to this great web station called Technicolor Web Of Sound If you haven’t checked this station you should. Their playlist features many obscure 60s Psychedelic bands and every once in a while will throw in a nice hit or two.
My Earworm for today is ‘If It’s Love’ by Kensington Market . It’s off their record from 1969 entitled Aardvark. They were a band from Toronto, Canada and were active from 1967-1969. The main singer/songwriter, Keith McKie was originally from St. Alban, England.

carol brown makes me smile
So last night I found myself at the Flight of the Conchords show at the Rimac in San Diego. First off, I don’t even remember the last time I saw a show in a gym. Odd. And those Rimac parking signs drove me up the wall and are less than intuitive. Gah.
Anyhow, humor and comedy stylings aside, I was impressed. The harmonies, use of an omnichord and the New Zealand Orchestra (comprised of a single cello player due to “cutbacks”) was all done tastefully and implemented seamlessly. Kudos to those dudes. Though the personal highlight for me was that Carol Brown song from Season 2. That riff makes me smile and that “awwwww” vocal hook (minus the female choir of course) is such a head swayer. Oh, and of course the Paul Simon reference. Lee just reminded me the other day that we caught a bit of their live set at last year’s Sasquatch Festival in Washington… I don’t recall, but then again I think I was in awe of the Gorge and mexican food in catering.
